George Blake crossed for a try in the second half..
Bond University have conceded their first Queensland Premier Rugby loss of the season going down to the Wests Bulldogs 31-15 in torrential conditions in Toowong.
The Bull Sharks started strongly with captain Dan Boardman sliding over after an excellent Hayden Sargeant up-and-under kick, forcing the mistake from the Bulldogs and landing in the arms of the captain who scored in the corner.
Bond piled on the pressure with a powerful maul off a lineout resulting in a penalty, with flyhalf Sargeant slotting the extra three points and taking Bond to an 8-0 lead after nine minutes.
The momentum began to shift with a robust maul from the Bulldogs’ forward pack crashing over the line for their first points.
The Bulldogs had all the possession and went on a scoring run with three unanswered tries to lead 24-8 at halftime.
The Bull Sharks needed first points in the second half and they got them through hooker George Blake who crossed for Bond’s second try of the afternoon.
Wests controlled the run of play in the final stages with superb tactical kicking from Bulldogs flyhalf Mason Gordon, with the home side rounding out the game 31-15.
Boardman spoke about the frustrations in building phases and maintaining possession.
“We were our own worst enemy. We struggled to retain our own ball and build consistent phases which made it tough in the conditions,” he said.
“We will take plenty of positives into next week with our rolling maul seeing good success and at scrum time.”
The Bull Sharks will be on the road again next week as they take on Norths in Round 5.
