Flying schoolboy already a star

July 11, 2022

Flynn Southam was on a plane to France for the Dolphins’ Commonwealth Games staging camp when he was named as the Gold Coast Bulletin Junior Sports Star of the year.

If Southam was at the Gold Coast Sports Star of the Year Awards at Royal Pines on Friday night, he would have heard how highly he is regarded by fellow athletes and city leaders.

The 17-year-old who’s in year 12 at Lindisfarne Anglican School in Terranora had nine other emerging prospects in his category.

The youngest member of Australia’s swimming squad will be competing in the 100m freestyle in Birmingham and is also a relay prospect.

Earlier this year Southam bettered the 100m freestyle Australian age record held by Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kyle Chalmers.

He secured his spot for the Commonwealth Games when he finished third in the 100m final at the Australian Championships which was won by William Yang with Zac Incerti in second.

Heats for Southam’s event are on Sunday July 31.
